Medicare has been very aggressive about looking for misvalued codes and thus savings to the Medicare program. These efforts have manifested themselves in CMS finalizing multiple procedural payment reductions (MPPR) to the professional component (PC) of MR, CT and US services. It also has produced many new bundled codes and revised codes that have been surveyed through the RVS Update Committee (RUC). The reimbursement challenges continue to surface by MedPAC, GAO, CMS and Congress. In addition, Congress has been mandated to make over $1 trillion in budgetary cuts through its Supercommittee. This potentially places radiology on the table for more cuts.
